Training activities offered by FASTER
To boost the objectives of increasing development of the human resources and building capacity of scientific staff within INRGREF on adaptation to climate change in land and water management, research skills, internationalisation, innovation and leadership to improve research excellence, innovation capacity and scientific quality of the institution concerned, 3 sets of training courses with international lecturers will be organised by FASTER and its partners.

Brief description
To raise awareness, promote an effective and integrated methodology and offer support to the identified Tunisian and international key-stakeholders – as well as Tunisian project’s partners – FASTER, in collaboration with The Node for Opportunities, Development and Environment organised targeted multidisciplinary trainings and capacity-building on various cross-cutting key topics, at the heart of European and international agenda.
This includes key aspects, knowledge, processes, as well as the capacities’ development of key-selected staff in understanding, managing and operating at international standards levels. These aspects are assumed to be a first step advantageous to further developing research excellence and harvest its benefits for the public and private sector.

The topics of the trainings
For decision-makers, a focus was put on “Leadership, innovation and effective decision-making for international cooperation”, with a 3-hours training by Tomas Matraia.
For Researchers, two days of trainings were organized, with the following topics:

Expert in internationalisation and innovation
Director of the Strategic Advisory Group The AdWisers and Executive Director of the multidisciplinary platform “The Node for Development, Environment and Opportunities”. His focus is to drive change, respond to contemporary challenges and seize new opportunities through business development, groundbreaking partnerships and capacity building.
Joan Pino
Director of CREAF
Joan Pino has been a professor of Ecology at the Barcelona Autonomous University since 2006 and a researcher at CREAF since 1997. He has been responsible for over 80 scientific publications, including articles in SCI journals and other journals and book chapters. He focuses his research on landscape ecology.
Susanna Albertini
Communication and engagement expert
Specializased in Psychology of work and business organization with multimedia and new technology communication. Project manager and researcher in EU- funded projects and expert in stakeholders’ engagement and networking, capacity building, game-based training, co-creation and creativity enabling factors, communication, impact and valorization of research results.
Robert Miskuf
Consultant in EU projects
Founder and CEO of PEDAL Consulting and Tenderio. Worked at the secretariat of the EU Parliament and successfully managed various EU regional and community projects (implemented over 30 FP7/H2020 projects). Also leading expert within the Responsible Research and Innovation six policy key areas the EC has identified: Public engagement, open access, gender equality, science education, ethics, and governance.
Prof. Michael Kahn
International policy adviser
Respected international policy adviser on innovation policy, strategy, measurement and evaluation, he has maintained a lifelong commitment to social entrepreneurship and development. He has worked as an academic, official, consultant and Ministerial Adviser, with project experience in many countries and institutions.
Yane Frenski
IT and education expert
International expert on education, technology and innovation working for the past decades for various United Nations offices around the globe. He is specialized in designing global solutions serving a wide range of beneficiaries while providing localization, contextualization and implementation of SDGs.

Brief description
The primary objective of this course program was to increase the development of human resources and build the capacity of scientific staff within INRGREF. More specifically, it focused on honing their research skills, internationalisation, innovation and leadership to improve research excellence, innovation potential and the overall scientific quality of the institution.
The research excellence tools training comprised five excellence-training courses and has been organised by CREAF, Lund, Vision and EfB in October 2019, to provide the necessary knowledge and tools to increase research performance indicators.

Consultant on water management policy analysis and senior field expert promoting innovative governance practices with a particular interest in the Mediterranean region. Responsible for the implementation of innovative tools and methods in different case study areas.
Anabel Sánchez
CREAF Researcher
Holds a BSc in Biology and a MSc degree on sustainable water management. Extensive experience of participation in over 25 national and EU projects working on assessing the impacts of climate change on forest and water ecosystems and their vulnerability and identifying adaptive management strategies. Highly interested in governance and public participation in environmental issues.
Katia Maronati
Consultant on EU projects
Extensive working experience acquired through 20 years of work in different positions (communication and management), both in the private and public sectors. In the past 10 years, Ms. Maronati has worked within EU projects as a consultant for private companies as well as Institutions, in the field of communication and development.
Leonardo Piccinetti
Managing director at Europe for Business
Extensive experience as a Consultant for Research and Innovation EU funding schemes and has worked on several FP7 and H2020 Projects on food, water, energy and ICT-related fields. Mr. Piccinetti holds a BSc in Economics at University of Rome with a particular focus on water management in Mediterranean countries.
Anders Ackfeldt
Professor at Lund University
Mr. Ackfeldt is responsible for teacher collaboration and commissioned education at the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies. Mr. Ackfeldt has developed successful E-learning courses at the centre is the author of several books, book chapters, and journal articles.

Brief description
The primary objective of the specialized training program is to increase and update the educational and research capacity of INRGREF and associated partners. Specifically, this will focus on enhancing research skills and tools and improving research excellence, innovation potential and the overall scientific quality of the institutions.
Thus, the specialized training program comprises at least nine excellence-training courses that will be organised by CREAF and Lund University, to provide the necessary knowledge and tools to increase research performance indicators.

The 1st Specialized training program focused on adaptation to climate change in forest, water and landscape management in the Mediterranean, governance and policy analysis for adaptation. It was hosted online from 2 to 6 November 2020.

The trainers
Annelies Broekman
CREAF
Agricultural Engineer (2002, University of Bologna, Italy), PhD in Agricultural Economics (2007, University of Bologna, Italy) and MSc in Integrated Water Management (2008, University of Zaragoza, Spain). She is a consultant on water management policy analysis and has senior field expertise promoting innovative governance practices at local, national and international level, with a particular interest in the Mediterranean region. In 2013 she joined the Water and Global Change Research team at CREAF, with whom she collaborated in 8 projects (FP7, H2020 and national funds), focusing on the creation of multi-actor platforms for the co-design of adaptation solutions. Responsible for the implementation of innovative tools and methods in different case study areas, she uses lessons learned from developing competitive international projects.
Cristina Domingo
CREAF
Postdoctoral researcher. She works and develops several national and international research projects within the research group GRUMETS (Methods and Applications in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems).
Her research interests are focused on the use of remote sensing as a tool for the analysis of natural and climatic patterns. She is also interested in the role of Earth Observation as a tool for monitoring and improving ecosystem services and works on the analysis of dynamics of vegetation changes, whether natural or agricultural.
Diana Pascual
CREAF
She holds an MSc on Forest Engineering. She has experience in the field of engineering and consultancy, developing hydrological, floodability and impact assessment studies. Since 2009 she works at CREAF, assessing the effects of global change on water availability and forest ecosystems and testing in experimental plots how forest management can increase forest resiliency to climate change impacts. She has a strong background in ecohydrological modelling and cartography and data management. She has worked in several national and European projects (LIFE program, FP7) and currently is involved in LIFE MIDMACC project, implementing and testing different landscape management measures to meet climate change-related challenges un marginal mid-mountain areas of Spain.
Anabel Sánchez
CREAF
Holds a BSc in Biology and an MSc degree on sustainable water management. She joined CREAF in 1997 and she has extensive experience of participation in over 25 national and EU projects (from FP4 to H2020) working on assessing the impacts of climate change on forest and water ecosystems and their vulnerability and identifying adaptive management strategies working closely with citizens and stakeholders. She is highly interested in governance and public participation in environmental issues. She has coordinated the FP7-SiS BeWater project on co-creating adaptation plans for river basins, a citizen science platform on forest health and participates in the H2020 BESTMAP project on tools for Modelling Agricultural Policy. She has also participated as a trainer in various training programs and master courses on citizen science and global change impacts and adaptation in land and water management in the Mediterranean.
Enrique Doblas
CREAF
PhD in Biology, Enrique is the research coordinator of CREAF. He is thus involved in promoting collaboration within the centre, project development, coordination and evaluation (requested by the EC for H2020 and LIFE), and networking. He is also interested in international cooperation and was PI of the project MENFRI (EC program on Research to Innovation), from which he founded the NODE, an NGO that forge ground-breaking partnerships to overcome complex challenges to development and the environment. As researcher, Enrique has contributed and still doing so to several EC projects on landscape resilience and management under global change while he also perseveres with his principal line of research about soil invertebrate communities dynamics in forests and agroecosystems. His research has led to several talks and publications at the international level.
Lluís Pesquer
CREAF
Doctor in Geography, Master in Computational Sciences and BS in Physical Sciences, he carries out his research activity in the Research Group on Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GRUMETS) and CREAF. His main research interests are: spatial analysis, geostatistical analysis applied to remote sensing, radiometric correction methodologies for remote sensing images, interoperability and standardization of GIS and ICT tools in the field of water and parallelized geospatial solutions in HPC environments.
Eduard Pla
CREAF
Environmental scientist (BSc, Autonomous University of Barcelona UAB, 1996) and PhD in Ecology (UAB 2002). Since 2002 he works at CREAF involved in local and European projects assessing the response of Mediterranean forests to climate change at different spatial scales. He was assistant professor in ecology at Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and University of Barcelona (2003-2007). Recently his scientific interests are related to water scarcity effects on Mediterranean ecosystems and forest management for climate change adaptation. He has been involved in ACCUA, FP7 CLICO, FP7 BeWater projects and has technically coordinated LIFE+ MEDACC project. Currently, he is member of the coordination team of LIFE MIDMACC project.
Ronny Berndtsson
Lund University
Ronny Berndtsson is a full professor and deputy director of Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies, Lund University. He has more than 35 years of experience in university teaching and research in water resources management, water supply and sanitation, socioeconomic hydrology, and climate change effects on sustainable development. He has acted as UNDP consultant during several occasions regarding socioeconomic development and water issues. At present, he is a coordinator of strategic research areas the multidisciplinary Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies at Lund University. He has worked as national team leader in several larger EU-collaborations such HYDROMED and SOWAMED related to capacity building within water management in socioeconomic development in the Middle East. Presently he is co-leading World Bank funded capacity-building project on water and health in collaboration with Ministry of health and six universities in Kazakhstan. Google publication h-index = 49. Key role in the project: to lead courses and publication strategies for Tunisian partners
Magnus Persson
Lund University
Magnus Persson is a full professor at the Department of Water Resources Engineering, Lund University. His research focusses on soil physics, measurement techniques and interaction crop-water-soil. He has been in charge of developing excellence in master programs at water resources engineering. He has extensive experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate educational level. He is at present leading educational planning and development of new courses in water resources engineering. Key role in project: lead the educational activities and develop experimental facilities in course work for innovative agricultural techniques.
Linus Zhang
Lund University
Linus Zhang is an associate professor at Lund University. He has a B.Sc. in Hydrogeology & Engineering Geology from China and PhD in water resources engineering, Lund University. He has wide knowledge base in hydrology and water resources and long term experiences in research and development in both developed and developing countries. His research interests include integrated water resources management, arid-zone hydrology, advanced and high-performance hydrological modeling and unsaturated zone hydrology. Main international experiences are mainly from following countries: China, Germany, France, UK, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Iran. He has also high organizational, pedagogical and management skills in international project implementation.
Hossein Hashemi
Lund University
Hossein Hashemi is a senior lecturer at the Department of Water Resources Engineering and Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies, Lund University. He received his PhD in Water Resources Engineering, with emphasis on water management in arid areas, in 2014. His Ph.D. thesis was based on a joint project between the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) and the Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies at Lund University, Sweden. His Ph.D. research was focused on groundwater management, groundwater artificial recharge, and water harvesting techniques as the main and efficient approach to increase the availability of water supply and reach sustainable water resources use in Middle Eastern countries. Before joining Lund University, he served as a research engineer at the Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Iran for several years. He also served as postdoctoral scholar at the Center for Groundwater Evaluation and Management (GEM), Department of Geophysics at Stanford University, USA (2015-2017). At Stanford, he focused on the application of remote sensing data in the field of hydrology and groundwater hydrology i.e., precipitation, temperature, groundwater, and subsidence. His research interests primarily lie in remote sensing, climate change, and surface water and groundwater management in arid areas.
Erik Nilsson
Lund University
Erik Nilsson has a PhD in Water Resources Engineering from Lund University, Sweden. He is currently an environmental engineer working in environmental management, sustainability, and international development. He has research and project management experience in environmental engineering and management from Chad, Mozambique, South Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom and Zambia. He has strong numerical, problem solving, and leadership skills along with the abilities to collaborate efficiently in international and multicultural contexts.
